北京市语言文字工作委员会贯彻执行国家语言文字工作的方针政策，贯彻执行国家以及有关部门公布发表的各项通用语言文字规范标准，编制语言文字工作的中长期计划，依法对社会语言文字应用实施管理和监督，大力推广和积极普及普通话，进一步推行《汉语拼音方案》促进语言文字的规范化、标准化。北京市语委办是市语委的常设机构，是市教委的内设处室，现设编制3人。
